A Writing Prompt

Write a short short piece about this tree. You can do so using any method you desire. Perhaps it’s a poem bringing it to life? Maybe it is an origin story? Or perhaps it is the focus of a journey? Whatever the case may be, tell me a story.

  1. Jeremiah wrote:
“He is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream: it fears not the heat when it comes; in the year of drought it shows no distress.” (Jeremiah 17:5-8 (78 C) )

    Hey Jerry,
Thanks for the tip on not fearing heat – I don’t. I do, however, very much feel heat, demonstrated by the ruin of many sweat stained shirts.
Also not showing distress during drought, we must ‘agree to disagree.’ This fourth quarter, my stocks dried up considerably. As supplementary to an already meager pension, it’s hard not to stress out.
Maybe King David was more on point: “… that person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in due season.” (Psalm 1:1-6)
My tree is in Winter. Please, God, I am due a change of season.
